A project transforming the energy efficiency of 130 homes in Bridlington will take on the country’s best schemes for a prestigious national award at the Constructing Excellence National Awards on Friday, November 8th.
The awards will be held at the London Marriott Grosvenor Square Hotel with over 500 built environment professionals coming together for the finale.
East Riding Council and Hobson & Porter’s holistic approach to thermal upgrading works on the Easton Road Estate turned the homes from having zero insulation, to exceeding today’s new-build standards.
The work’s already been recognised with the Sustainability title at this year’s Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber Awards. Now, it will face the country’s best for the national title.
Hobson & Porter Managing Director Richard Hunter said: “This was an innovative and bold approach to upgrading ageing housing, which hasn’t just benefited those living in the homes, but been recognised on a national scale.
“The idea was devised by East Riding Council and delivered by Hobson & Porter in a strong collaboration. It has greatly benefited the community, as it was completed without having to remove residents, or demolish any housing, keeping the community together.
“The homes have gone from having zero insulation to becoming homes which exceed today’s new-build standards. This has helped take residents out of fuel poverty with a cost-effective and holistic approach to thermal upgrades.”
To make the homes as efficient as possible improvements were made to everything from the building fabric, through to the mechanical and electrical systems.
This included energy efficient heating, electrical and lighting systems; new high-performance double-glazed uPVC windows and doors; new external wall insulation with innovative brick aesthetics, new insulated porches and entrance ways.
It is another strong collaboration between Hobson & Porter and East Riding Council; a working relationship enjoyed for many years. In recent months 10 new affordable homes were built in South Cave for the council.
Among those in the shortlist for the Sustainability category at this year’s Constructing Excellence Awards are:
