Hobson & Porter wins top Humber Renewables Award

We’re delighted to have been named the winner of the Best Renewable Energy Project or Installation category at the 2019 Humber Renewables Awards.

It is recognition of our team’s excellent work in delivering the multi-million-pound East Coast Hub in Grimsby – the onshore operations and maintenance centre for Ørsted.

The awards highlight the exceptional work being carried out by green companies across both banks of the Humber, with the organisers describing this year’s awards as a highly competitive year to match the Humber’s burgeoning renewables’ industry.

We were also shortlisted for the Medium/Large Business of the Year award, which was picked up by James Fisher Marine Services.

Richard Hunter, managing director for Hobson & Porter, said: “This project has been a real team effort in extending the existing operations’ centre at Grimsby’s Royal Docks, creating a world-class facility for the operations and maintenance of offshore wind farms.

“We’re really pleased with the work we’ve done, which is down to the efforts of everyone involved – from the onsite team, the office staff and the consultants who supported the project.

“We’ve built up a really good partnership with Ørsted with the East Coast Hub another example of a friendship which goes from strength to strength.

“Six or seven years ago we would not have anticipated renewables to have such a big presence in the construction industry with onshore building projects such as this. It is an area which continues to grow, and one we continue to grow in. Our current work on the Aura Innovation Centre marked the eighth project we have undertaken in the offshore energy sector, a remarkable achievement considering as a business we have never stepped foot offshore.

“Congratulations to everyone who won Humber Renewables Awards and for those shortlisted. There were some wonderful examples showing why the Humber has gained an enviable reputation as being the UK’s Energy Estuary, and at the forefront of the country’s zero-carbon ambitions.”

Hobson & Porter receives LABC award for East Coast Hub work

We’re delighted to have been named a winner in LABC’s Best Commercial Building category at this year’s South Yorkshire and Humber Building Excellence Awards.

The award is for the work for Ørsted on the East Coast Hub in Grimsby. The building is the largest centre of its kind in the UK. As the principal contractor, we extended the existing operations’ centre at Grimsby Royal Docks, creating a world-class facility for the operations and maintenance of offshore wind farms.

Hobson & Porter Business Development Director Dave Blades said: “We are delighted to receive this award and to be recognised in this way for the hard work carried out on this important project.

“It is recognition to all of our staff who delivered the project to such a high standard.”

The LABC Building Excellence Awards showcases buildings and design teams that have had to tussle with complex, technical or construction issues and building site constraints.

The North East Lincolnshire Building Control said: “We wish to congratulate Hobson & Porter, the Harris Partnership and their clients Ørsted, on winning the Best Commercial Project category in the LABC South Yorkshire and Humber Building Excellence Awards 2019.

“After working in association with the team over three phases of the East Coast Hub on Grimsby Docks we recognise that the award is richly deserved. The contractors have worked closely throughout with Building Control to ensure a safe, accessible and healthy environment for the building users is achieved.”

It’s not the first time Hobson & Porter has tasted LABC success. In 2015 the Westermost Rough Operations and Maintenance Building on the Grimsby Royal Dock was named Best Commercial Building at the regional South Yorkshire and Humber awards. The work for DONG Energy (now known as Ørsted), was the first in the world to operate a huge 6 megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbines.

Members of the team picked up the latest award at a ceremony at the Forest Pines Hotel in North Lincolnshire.

Bringing wheelbarrow innovation to East Yorkshire students

In our ongoing commitment to inspire the next generation of builders, we’ve teamed up with BucketBarrow to showcase its wheelbarrow innovation.

We organised for the company to come and speak to students at Hull and Bishop Burton Colleges to highlight the efficiencies of the technology which involves four strengthened buckets and one multipurpose scoop.

BucketBarrow will also be among the host of companies taking part in our unique Foundations Live event at Bishop Burton College on October 2nd. It aims to create a sustainable workforce for the construction industry – educating, developing and upskilling the next generation in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

Dave Blades is Business Development Director. He said: “We are pleased to have facilitated these events. It is yet another example of the importance we place in our key values, which includes safety, skills, community and partnerships. It’s all part of our Foundations initiative to create a sustainable workforce for the construction industry – educating, developing and upskilling the next generation in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.”

It is an ethos shared by BucketBarrow, who said: “We are proud to support Hobson & Porter’s Foundation’s goal of education, development and the upskilling of the next generation in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.”
