New state-of-the-art care homes to transform lives in Hessle and Hornsea

Hobson & Porter has completed a multi-million-pound care home in Hessle, which features a cinema, bar, sensory gardens and a beauty salon.

The award-winning construction firm completed the 18-month project for East Yorkshire-based care provider Yorkare Homes.

Tranby Park is a 64-bed care home located off Heads Lane, providing residential and dementia care. It features several apartments for couples and the home has large gardens, an artificial bowls green and three terraces.

Mark Smee is a Director at Hobson & Porter. He said: “This is a state-of-the-art care home with a bar, cinema, and hair salon. The build has been successful – it’s three storeys and we’ve had to put a new road in.

“There’s a dementia ward, three grass balconies and it is a nice place to live.”

It’s the third care home Hobson & Porter has built for the award-winning East Yorkshire care provider – including Lindsey Hall in Cleethorpes and Beverley Parklands in Beverley.

Work is also underway on a new multi-million-pound Mere View Care Home in Hornsea.

Mark said: “We have a successful relationship with Yorkare and have a proven track record in building the kind of facilities they are after.

“The work in Hornsea overlapped with the building in Hessle. Both are similar facilities, but slightly different in shape, with the Hessle facility a ‘h’ shape, while the one in Hornsea is more of an ‘l’ shape.”

Once complete in summer 2020, Mere View Care Home will provide residential and dementia care with views over Hornsea Mere and the local countryside, but with close links to the town centre and seafront.

It will include sensory gardens, a pub, a full beauty salon, a bowling green and allotments.

Celebrating Sustainability win at Constructing Excellence Awards

Our work for East Riding Council to transform the energy efficiency of 130 homes has earned us a prestigious Constructing Excellence award.

We were named winners of the Sustainability category at the Constructing Excellence in Yorkshire and Humber Awards at a glittering awards night, held at New Dock Hall at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, on Thursday, July 11th.

East Riding Council and Hobson & Porter’s holistic approach to the thermal upgrading works on the Easton Road Estate in Bridlington turned these homes from having zero insulation, to becoming properties which exceed today’s new-build standards.

The project team helped the homes become more efficient at every turn by addressing the building fabric, whilst also addressing the mechanical and electrical systems of the homes.

This has included:

  • Energy efficient heating, electrical and lighting systems.
  • New high-performance double glazed UPVC windows and doors.
  • New external wall insulation with innovative brick aesthetics.
  • New insulated porches and entrance ways.
  • New roofs with high-performance insulation.

Mark Smee, director for Hobson & Porter, said: “These properties were tired, inefficient and in need of frequent service and repair, generating greenhouse gases and waste with every visit.

“The thermal performance of these homes is exceptional and has surpassed all expectations, a monumental feat considering some would argue these homes were destined for demolition.

“The local authority and thus the tax payer saved millions of pounds compared to rebuilding the homes, whilst the established community remained intact and were given a substantially-improved quality of life after the works.

“It’s a scheme we’re particularly proud of, so we’re delighted the work has been recognised at the Constructing Excellence Awards. Congratulations to the project team and everyone involved at the scheme, this award is recognition of all your efforts.”

Constructing Excellence in Yorkshire and Humber (CEYH) is the regional partner to Constructing Excellence, the single organisation charged with driving the change agenda in construction, housing and regeneration.

It is run by the School of Built Environment and Engineering at Leeds Beckett University.

Hobson & Porter doubles the size of Scunthorpe GP surgery

The Ancora GP practice in Scunthorpe has doubled in size following the completion of our building work as part of its £1 million redevelopment.

The new facilities include three new consultation rooms, a minor operations unit, waiting room and reception and a service to support opioid-dependent patients.

Our team began work on the branch on Detuyll Street last September.

Adrian Morley, Contracts Manager for Hobson & Porter, said: “We’re delighted to have delivered this upgraded facility which will provide huge benefits to both staff and users of the Ancora Medical Practice.

“Hobson & Porter is committed to providing building projects that demonstrate social value and lasting legacy and the new Ancora Medical Practice is a prime example of this. We have an enviable track record of delivering first-class healthcare facilities and are proud to add this latest GP surgery to our portfolio.”

The 10-partner practice cares for more than 20,000 patients across the town and has 13 doctors, six nurses and nine healthcare assistants, as well as being a training centre for GPs.

Ancora Practice Director, Christine Buckley, said: “Our doctors were so determined to provide better services for their patients that they invested significantly into the project out of their own, personal incomes.

“This commitment, alongside additional funding from NHS England and North Lincolnshire Council, meant that we were able to double the size of our surgery.

“We have always been restricted by a lack of space. But the new rooms will allow us to hold extra clinics and offer better services to our patients, closer to home.”

Creative Hornsea hoarding artwork wins top national award

Our colourful hoardings around the East Riding Leisure Hornsea site has been named a winner in the Ivor Goodsite Hoarding Competition 2019.

The competition allows Considerate Constructor Scheme-registered sites to invite local schools, colleges and community groups to transform the hoardings into attractive murals.

Under the titles ‘Pride in your town’ and ‘#loveconstruction’, we teamed up with pupils from four Hornsea schools, receiving over 500 submissions from children aged 2 through to 15.

Dave Blades, Hobson & Porter’s Business Development Director, said: “All of the pupils who submitted artwork for this year’s entry should be proud, it is a fantastic achievement to be named as winners. The hoardings look amazing and really brighten up the East Riding Leisure Hornsea construction site.

“The local pupils have shown real keenness and an enormous sense of pride and skills in their designs, so I am delighted we’ve been able to display their work in such a prominent location, where they are available for the whole town to see.

“It’s been great working with the pupils who I hope we have inspired to consider careers in the construction industry when they finish their studies.”

Praising the partnership, Laura Field, Head of Design and Technology at Hornsea School and Language College, said: “We are thrilled to have been named winners. The students loved working on this project. It was an incredibly exciting thought for the children that their work would be displayed and viewed by all of Hornsea.”

Behind the hoardings, Hobson & Porter are hard at work on the £7.5 million redevelopment of the East Riding Leisure Hornsea, which includes an extension and the relocation of the town’s library and customer service centre.

The centre is due to be completed and re-opened in Easter 2020.

Construction of major green energy hub hits halfway milestone

We’re pleased to have entered the second half of our multi-million-pound construction of the Aura Innovation Centre in Hessle for the University of Hull.

The green energy hub at the Bridgehead Business Park will provide large businesses and SMEs with the space to collaborate and innovate to deliver low-carbon energy and clean growth.

To mark the milestone of the 10-month project, we’ve been taking over 150 local school pupils behind the scenes at the construction site, inspiring the next generation of builders.

The children, from All Saints’ CE Federation in Hessle, donned high-vis and were taught all about construction and renewable energy and technology.

It’s all part of our Foundations initiative to create a sustainable workforce for the construction industry – educating, developing and upskilling the next generation in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

Garry Allen, contracts manager at Hobson & Porter, said: “It is great to have reached the half-way point of this important development, which will play a huge role in strengthening the region’s reputation as a leader in offshore wind innovation, bringing together the major players in the industry.

“We’ve also enjoyed engaging with local school children. They are our future and it was wonderful to see how interested they were in the development of the site and both the construction and renewable energy industries on the whole.

Garry added: “A large part of our Foundations initiative involves going out into the community, in which we work to engage with students of all ages, introducing them to the wealth of career opportunities available across the industry and the skills, qualifications and personal qualities required to succeed in our sector.”

The Aura Innovation Centre project has helped play a major role in the initiative, as we have introduced many local pupils to the construction process and also taken part in numerous activities both on site and in the classroom to engage them with STEM subjects.

State-of-the-art research centre for Daisy Appeal continues progress

We’re pleased to report that our construction of a vital new research centre for the Daisy Appeal in Cottingham is continuing to progress well.

The Molecular Imaging Suite in Cottingham will translate scientific and medical research advances into clinical use. It will also house a GENtrace 600 cyclotron which will enable the capacity to create customised radiotracers to detect early signs of cancer, cardiovascular disease and dementia.

The complex process of installing the centre’s iconic cladding and specialist M&E is now underway as the project team works hard to deliver the facility, which will be based at Cottingham’s Castle Hill Hospital.

Mike Beal, construction director for Hobson & Porter said: “We’re pleased to be undertaking this major project for the Daisy Appeal. The centre will be a unique, state-of-the-art facility which will develop new radiotracers for use in cancer, cardiovascular and dementia imaging.

“The work is going well and our team is working hard to meet the project’s completion date in the coming months.”
